The most important part of your salon visit is your consultation with your stylist.  This time is used to get to know you, your lifestyle and your expectations from the salon visit. Follow the steps below to ensure a successful consultation and appointment.

1. Come as you are

Head into your appointment with your hair clean and styled naturally. Hair that hasn’t been washed in a few days will appear darker because of your hair’s natural oils, and your stylist needs to know your actual hair colour before colouring. In addition, your natural hair is an important factor in the cuts and styles that will work best for your hair type. If your hair is wavy, don’t come to the salon with is flat ironed straight.

2. Speak your mind

Your consultation is your time to express everything you want to tell your stylist before the appointment, so don’t hold back. Be sure to let your stylist know if you are looking for a cut or style for a specific event, such as a wedding, or if you’re looking for a new daily style. Stylists use the information you give them to determine what would work best for you.

3. Be Realistic

If you’re looking for a big change, keep your expectations in check. Many people will see a style that looks amazing on a celebrity but it might not work as well for your face shape, hair type or lifestyle. Your stylist will determine what would work best for you.

4. Bring photos

When planning to try a new colour or cut, find photos that depict the hair you want. Just remember, not all hairstyles and colours work with everyone, and your stylist will give you advice based on your specific hair type that match as closely as possible to your desired look.

5. Give honest feedback

If this is a stylist you’ve been seeing for awhile, be sure to touch on what you liked or didn’t like with your last cut or colour service. Was the colour a little too bright? Your hair a bit too short for your liking? Or maybe you absolutely loved what they did with it! Don’t be afraid to discuss these details – your stylist wants you to leave happy and your hair is a reflection of their work.
